Working Girls

1974

Honey (Sarah Kennedy) is an unemployed, recent college graduate who arrives in Los Angeles to look for work. She may be short on money, but not on ingenuity. During her first twenty-four hours in town she manages to convince a cafe owner to give her a free meal; she also manages to convince Denise (Laurie Rose), an artist who works as a sign painter, and Jill (Lynne Guthrie), a law student who works as a part-time cocktail waitress, to let her move in with them rent free; and finally, she manages to find herself a man, Mike (Ken Del Conte), who earns his living as a street musician.

But things don't go too smoothly for Honey. When Mike meets Denise he decides he prefers her to Honey. And Honey still hasn't found a job. In desperation, she takes out an ad in the paper which reads, "I will do anything for money!" She gets some indecent and funny replies, including a request from a Mrs. Borden (Mary Beth Hughes) who wants to hire

Honey to kill her husband!

Honey's luck changes at last when she meets Vernon Zugsmith IV (Solomon Sturges), a bored, lonely, young millionaire who hires her to be his companion and talk to him. Unfortunately, working for Vernon makes Honey bored and lonely. So Vernon loans her some money to invest for him. To his surprise, she succeeds in making him a lot more money. Honey is thrilled, but Vernon is not. Now she is just another business competitor to him and so he fires her. Honey is crushed. It looks as if Vernon has permanently disappeared from her life.

Like Honey, Jill's adventures are also involved with her work. When she is offered a raise, Jill goes to work as a stripper at the nightclub where she has been working as a waitress. At first she is shy about stripping, but once she has done it, she thinks of it as just another job. While at work, she meets Nick (Mark Thomas) a young syndicate hood. Jill and Nick fall in love and he proposes marriage, but Jill refuses his proposal and leaves him because she is serious about following a law career and fears that his underworld connections could hurt her chances.

While Jill and Honey are enmeshed in their own adventures, Denise and Mike start living together. Mike enjoys sharing an apartment with the three girls. However, he keeps them ignorant of his shadier activities. Mike is a fence as well as a musician. His music serves as a cover for his illegal activities. When Denise accidentally finds this out, she is very upset, but Mike's fencing activities are quickly ended after he is brutally beaten by some rivals.

The three Working Girls are left sadder and wiser by their adventures. But they are soon cheered up when Honey receives a sixty thousand dollar bonus from Vernon as a reward for the money she made him. Honey shares the money equally with Denise, Jill, and Mike before setting out to join Vernon in a new money-making enterprise.
