House of Missing Girls
1969 Anna Gael
In a wild car chase, Varen and Bob are being pursued and shot at by the Corbeaux brothers. Varen's car catches fire, but the two manage to get away. They hitch-hike back to Paris with a charming girl called Agnes, who makes quite an impression on Varen.
Varen and Bob need money to get out of Paris before the Corbeaux brothers catch up with them, so they go to see Georges, a white slave trader. Georges offers them a deal: he will pay them if they will find more girls for him. Varen does not want this this kind of work, but Bob is less scrupulous and gets a pretty girl called Leda into Georges' clutches. Georges is helped by Olga, who has the job of training his victims.
Varen has met Agnes again, the girl who drove them to Paris. She is full of kindness and humour, qualities Varen had forgotten, or perhaps never known. They go out together, and Agnes seems attracted by Varen's mixture of toughness and charm.
At the end of the evening Varen goes to see Bob; Georges invites them to go and play poker at his villa. A mysterious message lets the Corbeaux brothers know about this poker session, in the course of which one of them, Francky, succeeds in killing Bob. But then, after a fight with Varen, Paul, the second brother, is killed by Georges. After this showdown Georges promptly leaves the villa, and Varen goes to find Agnes. She is horrified when he arrives injured, and tenderly dresses his wounds. They spend what is left of the night together.
Next morning Varen telephones Georges, who arranges to meet him that evening and asks him to bring Agnes. Having tricked Varen into leaving him alone with Agnes, Georges tries to rape her, but she defends herself desperately, knocks him out and flees in horror.
The battered and bleeding Georges is discovered by Olga, the Corbeaux brothers' accomplice; with the help of Francky, the surviving brother, she gets rid of him so that Francky can take his place.
A lorry driver helps Agnes in her panic- stricken flight by taking her as far as the Normandy coast. There she is taken in by a kindly but mysterious person named Claude, who leads a solitary existence in a blockhouse. He is a poet, and has a grand piano perched on the cliff. Agnes spends several days in his dreamlike world, but soon returns to Paris to find Varen.
Varen is counting on Olga to help him get out of the country with Agnes, but Olga is only playing with him, and Agnes is soon caught up in the organisation again, while Varen is killed by Francky.
Claude knows that Agnes is in danger, and goes to Paris to look for her. He saves her in the niŽk of time, just as she is about to be sent off with a consignment of other girls.
