Chain Gang Women

1971       Barbara Mills

Harris (Robert Lott), a young man serving a short sentence in a Georgia State prison for involvement with marijuana sales, is transferred to a chain gang. To his immediate regret, he finds himself chained to a convicted killer, Mike Weed (Michael Sterns), who informs him that Harris will be in deep trouble should he so much as pull on the leg chains.

Weed initiates an escape and the "short timer" finds himself chained to the runaway killer who will stop at nothing to keep his freedom.

While on the run, Harris takes Weed to the apartment of Harris' girl friend Ann (Linda York), who has moved close to the prison to be near Harris.

While Harris is out buying civilian clothes, Weed rapes his girl friend. She is afraid to tell Harris and later, the three go in her car on back roads in an effort to get out of the state. The attempt proves fruitless because every road is guarded by police roadblocks. Weed decides they will find a house

and hide out and while he is scouting a small farm, Harris tells Ann to leave.

Weed returns to the automobile to find the girl gone and becomes incensed at Harris' stupidity. There is a short fight which the bigger Weed wins easily but his anger is short lived. He has found a house in which they can hide. The two escapees take over the farmhouse and force the owner, an old farmer (Ralph Campbell), to witness Weeds' rape of his very young wife (Barbara Mills).

Later, the girl confides to the other convict, Harris, that she hates her husband and pleads for him to take her away with them. After warning the old man not to call the police if he values his wife's life, they again take to the back roads, this time with the young wife.

They come upon another roadblock which Weed succeeds in crashing through but with the police right on their tail. Finally shaking the police, they return to the farm to find the old man gone.

The girl retires, Weed rests on the sofa while Harris stands guard outside. Weed cannot force himself to stay awake, however, and the farmer stealthily enters and throttles the sleeping killer.

The girl is startled by a shotgun blast, runs to the window and is reassured by her husband who states he has killed both men . . . and everything can now go on just as it was before.

Thwarted in her only chance to escape, the young wife lays back on her bed, thinking about the two dead men. . . and her lost chance for freedom.
