The Black Hole

1979       Anthony Perkins

Walt Disney Productions developed Hollywood's most sophisticated camera system, ACES (Automated Camera Effects System), for use on their $20 million deep-space adventure about science's ultimate phenomenon, "The Black Hole."

Producer Ron Miller says ACES represents "a quantum leap in the state of computerized cameras." It was developed for special effects director Peter Ellenshaw by Disney Studio in close cooperation with Academy Award-winning special effects wizards Eustace Lycett and Art Cruickshank and a team of technicians headed by Don Iwerks and WED Enterprises "imagineers" David Snyder and David English.

The new systems allows more flexibility in miniature and effects photography than ever before possible with maximum optical precision, Miller says. The camera's computer banks are housed in a separate shed that has been built on the Disney sound stage next to the set.

"We'll have more control over the quality of the film. The movements of objects on screen will be smoother and will look more realistic than in other films where less sophisticated equipment was used," Lycett said.

Director Gary Nelson began principal photography October 11, 1978 at Disney studio in Burbank, where all the sound stages were occupied and closed to visitors during the six-month shooting schedule. Another eight months were required for special photographic processes.

Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux and Ernest Borgnine star. In 70mm "Technovision" and color by Technicolor, "The Black Hole" was written by Jeb Rosebrook and Gerry Day from a story by Rose-brook and Bob Barbash & Richard Landau. Buena Vista releases.
